Expression and Screening
GeneMill are proud to offer a wide range of screening and phenotyping facilities including:
- High-throughput colony screening
- Small-scale fermentation and expression screening

GeneMill is one of only a handful of facilities offering custom expression and screening services using the Biolector® Pro from M2P-labs, a world leading supplier of microbioreactors. Additionally, a high-throughput colony picker screening platform from Kbiosystems is available at GeneMill, allowing monochromatic imaging for standard picking as well as fluorescence capabilities to efficiently manage large, diverse populations and accurately and rapidly pick colonies of interest.
High-throughput colony screening
GeneMill offers use of an advanced colony picking platform from kbiosystems for selection of positive clones from agar plates. The K6-2 colony picker allows automated picking of colonies from numerous source plates into multiple destination plates.
Functions of the colony picker include:
- Colony PCR and culture set up
- Replica plating
Selection strategies which are supported by this system include:
- Blue-white screening
- Red-White screening
- Screening for GFP expression
Once positive clones have been identified fully automated plasmid preparation is possibly using our Qiacube liquid handling platform.
Small-scale fermentation and expression screening
GeneMill is one of only a handful of facilities offering custom expression and screening services using the Biolector® Pro from M2P-labs, a world leading supplier of microbioreactors.
The Biolector® Pro enables up to 48 small-scale fermentations on a single plate for high-throughput screening of clones and culture conditions. Cutting edge technology allows online monitoring of the most common fermentation parameters:
- Dissolved oxygen
- Fluorescence (GFP, CFP, RFP)
In combination with the Robolector® robotic liquid handing platform, dosing and sampling of cultures can be easily set up according to triggers specified by the customer. For instance:
- Addition of chemicals (e.g. IPTG) to induce protein expression when cultures reach a particular cell density
- Sampling of cultures at regular intervals 24 hours a day
Using M2P-labs patented FlowerPlate® microtiter plates we are able to provide small scale culture conditions with the mixing and gas transfer capabilities seen in large scale baffled shake flasks. This therefore enables informed selection of optimal growth conditions that should approximate those required in scale-up of fermentations.
Use of advanced microfluidic-chip technology also permits continuous pH control and continuous, linear and stimulus triggered feeding modes with dosing down to 50nl.
GeneMill has recently upgraded the system to include additional modules allowing:
- Up regulation of oxygen
- Down regulation of oxygen
- CO2 controlled atmosphere
- Anaerobic conditions
